Mumbai. Karthik Laxman, a die-hard fan of Sachin Tendulkar, was arrested with a knife ahead of the third-place play-off match of IPL between Bangalore and Hyderabad. Karthik wanted to attack Jacques Kallis, the Bangalore batsman, so that Sachin Tendulkar retains the Orange Cap for scoring the maximum number of runs in the tournament. Kallis is 17 runs behind Tendulkar and is slated to play today’s match, while Tendulkar is doubtful to play in the finals tomorrow.
“The thought of Kallis replacing Tendulkar as the tournament’s highest run scorer has been hurting Karthik for long. He was emotionally charged up today owing to the fact that it was Tendulkar’s birthday too. He decided to fix the record himself by attacking Kallis and injuring him before the match.” informed ACP Pradyumna, security in-charge for the match, ruling out involvement of any terror group.

Karthik was arrested when he tried to intrude into the hotel’s area reserved for players. Initially he was apprehended by the hotel staff, but he fooled them by acting as an IT officer conducting raids on IPL teams. Incidentally, there was already an IT officer staying in the same hotel, whose testimony to a housekeeping boy led to Karthik’s arrest.
“He was just 10 meters away from Kallis when security-persons overpowered him.” said an eye-witness, “he was shouting Tendalya Tendalya and pumping fists in air as he was being taken away by policemen.”
No group has taken responsibility for the attack. Since Kallis is not an Australian, experts are also ruling out involvement of Shiv Sena, which had earlier avowed not to allow Australian players to play in IPL3. Experts believe that this incident is akin to Monica Seles stabbing case that took place in April 1993, where an obsessed fan of Steffi Graf had attacked Seles to help Graf become world’s No. 1 Tennis player again.
Karthik’s knife has been recovered but his statement is yet to be recorded. He might be just a crazy fan but the incident has added another murky chapter to the ongoing IPL, already marred with controversies and allegations.
