New Delhi. Various book printing and publishing companies in the Daryaganj area here have extended wholehearted support to Suresh Kalmadi in his struggle against union sports minister MS Gill, who had asked sports administrators to retire at the age of 70 besides limiting their tenure. These companies, led by Goldy Publishers, are worried over the prospect of reprinting the “who is who” pages of their General Knowledge booklets.
“We were sure that Suresh Kalmadi and other presidents and chairmen of various sports bodies were not going to retire for another twenty years or so, and hence we had bulk printed those pages to save costs. We already have stock print for the next five years and would have to suffer losses if these people were asked to leave.” said Lovely Singh, proprietor of Goldy Publishers, who is organizing all other publishers in the area to form a pressure group on the government.

Suresh Kalmadi’s name has been listed as the Chairman of Indian Olympic Association in this book ever since it was first published in 1996.
Lovely Singh has threatened that he and other publishers would not change the content of the “who is who” pages of the booklets even if these administrators were changed. The booklets published by these companies are sold mostly in the DTC buses and in private schools in the suburban areas of many parts of the country. Publishers are trying to leverage this fact to push their agenda.
“Most of the children reading in those private schools belong to the disadvantaged sections of the society and they would end up receiving wrong information, which will hamper their career growth. Clearly, this is an anti-poor and anti-dalit step by the government.” argued Karuna Malik of DMK (Draft Making Kings) Publishers.
These publishing and printing companies are planning to meet UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and request her to rein in the sports minister MS Gill.
Similar sentiments have also been echoed by many students preparing for banking, UPSC and state public service commission competitive exams, who feel that the “workload” for such exams would increase if these administrators were replaced with new ones.
“We were already sick of changing Chief Ministers in likes of Jharkhand and Goa and had to learn a new name almost each month, but a sense of balance was created with static names of these administrators. I hope status quo is maintained.” said Madhuri Gupta, a wannabe IFS.
