The article has been very well written and is quite a satire on Ms Bannerjee’s office. What I really find regressive are some of the comments posted against Bengalis and their way of life. Its a wonder this Internet….it gives an opportunity to illiterate louts to say to themselves, “Oh wow….now I can post my utterly irrelevant thoughts online, abuse my own countrymen and get away with it too”.
People say, Bengalis (or Bongs as scum like to call us) made an error in choosing communists to run their state. Yes, I apologize on behalf of all my fellow Bengalis who would not accept caste based politics, regional politics OR communal politics in our state. You see we thought we could have a secular and Utopian society where even the poorest of the poor, could say that they lived comfortably. This is why we kept voting the communists back to power, because it takes time to bring change.
The communists were ineffective in so far as to bring Utopia because in the end they only looked for the welfare of the worker class (that too only for a while) and in the end the worker class was so enamoured with this new found power to negotiate that they found means to stop working all together and still get a salary. Naturally the industries moved to greener pastures. That was the fault of the policy implemented by the party leaders….not a fault of communism.
The problem with the communist leaders of Bengal was that they were (and still are) very short sighted. They lack vision and hence can only think about today. And with the golden generation of Bengal leaders dying out there has been a steady influx of goons into political parties which only makes matters worse.
But this does not reflect poorly on Calcutta….because we dreamt of Utopia and we kept on pursuing it for years. We didn’t give up inspite of failures and related depression. I think that makes us better than people of some other states who fight over caste, region and religion.
Calcutta cannot match Delhi in terms of infrastructure, it cannot match Mumbai in terms of wealth, but we aren’t that badly off. I have lived in many parts of the country and still find that people in Calcutta obey traffic rules more determinedly, are more honest, helpful and decent than people outside the state, and if you don’t understand Bengali we dont discriminate against you, we even try to speak in a language you understand. Calcutta has a greater degree of communal harmony than elsewhere in India, has a literacy level amongst the highest in India, has been growing at double the pace of bangalore over the last few years, has a male to female ratio higher than the Indian average. Culturally as pointed out above we have produced some gems which India boast about on an international stage. The first IIT, the first IIM, and the first Metro was built in West Bengal. Speaking of the metro, did you know that the city of Calcutta has the most varied and highest number of public transportation systems found anywhere in India?
Yes I am afraid we like our maacher jhol (fish curry) just as the tamils swear by sambhar, the gujratis cant do without their dhoklas, theplas and khandvis, and the punjabis their chicken butter masala and alu gobi. Whats the harm in us eating fish? Yes we love chatting with our friends over a cup of tea. We find that having a drunken brawl with our friends after too many pegs does not agreee with our constitution. AND YES we love Rabindra sangeet…..you would too if you could hear it and most importantly understand it as the work of a genius who comes once in a millenia

Not everything bad about bengal. Bengal is 3rd largest economy in India. Kolkata is the gateway of east India. Bengal is very cheap. Anyone with earning 5k can live with comfort.

Now someone can argue that bengal was great or not. Please read history of India and history of freedom struggle. Know what bengal did for India. Maximum Nobel prize came from this state. Sourav Ganguly and Leander Paes is from Kolkata. Look at Bollywood . Please count how many creative people from here worked or working there.

Only respectable people can respect others.

Sorry, but the fact is that give Bongs their daily fish-jhol, Robindra Songeet, cup of tea at their adda to discuss things endlessly — and they can continue to live in hell-hole called Kolkota thinking that they are cat’s whiskers.

No wonder, most Bongs are eccentric and revel in the past when Bongal was great (was it ever?); meanwhile, the enlightened ones have left WB long ago for Mumbai, Delhi or New York.
