Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday laid the foundation stone for the Rs 16,700 crore-Navi Mumbai international airport, which is expected to ease flight operations at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport. The Airport has been under plan for so many years that many people who had bought property in this area of Mumbai are not even present in this world today. Sanil Banerjee’s, grandfather had bought a flat in Navi Mumbai some 30 years back in anticipation of the new airport, but he is no more, but it was still a historic occasion that Sanil attended the ground breaking ceremony yesterday.
Most of the property dealers in Navi Mumbai have been selling flats promoting them as very close to the airport and rates would sky rocket once the airport is fully functional. There was a sudden bom seen some 25-30 years back and Sanil’s grandfather bought a flat anticipating that the airport will soon be functional. Like him, there were hundreds of people who opted for property in the Navi Mumbai region. But soon they realized that the planing was only on paper with the ground work almost equal to zero. There were assurances and reassurances but the work couldn’t be started due to small issues popping up.
Yesterday was a historic occasion and there were tears in Sanil’s eyes when he attended the ground breaking ceremony. He has been told by the authorities that one of the terminals will be named after his grandfather as he was one of the very first people to buy property in Navi Mumbai. Other such residents have also come forward and asked the government to acknowledge all such citizens who made Navi Mumbai the growing region it is today by putting faith in the airport.
