Gujarati family stocks up Khakra for whole year fearing increase in GST rates after election results

15, Dec 2017 By Santosh Pradhan

Facing severe criticism over the implementation of Goods and Services Tax, the government just before the Gujarat election dates were announced took a slew of measures to ease the concerns of traders, exporters and small business while slashing the rates on 27 items of common consumption, including roti, khakhra, namkeen and stationery. However, in the midst of all this, the thin cracker snack – khakhra, popular in Gujarat, became the centre of the discussion. And the move actually may have worked in the favor of the BJP.

Exit polls on Thursday unanimously predicted that BJP would return to power in Gujarat and this has created havoc in the Khakhra loving community of Gujarat. Most of them fear that now that the results are completely in favor of one party, the GST rates on the loved snack may be increased and it won’t be reduced for the next 5 years. This rumor has led to people stocking up the snack for months and years to enjoy the current GST rates.

to keep more khakhras as he can live in a congested space but paying increased rates for Khakhra has never been an option for him. More and more people are taking clue from Sanil and piling up other snacks too, whose rates they fear might get increased after 18th Dec. But the move can actually back fire too as most Khakhra sellers have increased the rates slightly as the current demand is on an all time high.
