Chandigarh: Biopic on former Indian Hockey captain Sandeep Singh is ready for release this July but the producers may not end up with the profit that they had hoped for. Haryana Sports Department has sent a notice to the film’s producers asking for 30% of the film’s box office collections since Sandeep Singh is currently employed with Haryana Police as Deputy Superintendent of Police. If the producers refuse to pay the stated amount, Haryana government will approach Supreme Court to get a ban on the release.
Defending the decision, a Sports department official said,” The film’s producers want to make money through Sandeep’s story then some return we should also get on our investment, right? Sandeep was born in Haryana, utilized Haryana’s roads, electricity, water while growing up and eventually becoming this successful sportsperson. Now for next generation’s Sandeep, we need to build more infrastructure and that takes money.”
“Even currently, he is working with Haryana Police at a senior position so obviously any film made on him should not neglect Haryana Government and we should get at least 30% of the film’s collections. Instead of asking us to cancel our demand, journalists should ask every Indian to watch this film so that producers don’t suffer any loss after paying 30% of the collections to us”, he added.
As per sources, Soorma is just the starting point for the department and their main aim is the film based on 1983 World Cup triumph where Haryana’s Kapil Dev led the country to the title.
