Mumbai: Ranbir Kapoor’s last release ‘Sanju’ has been performing very well at the box office. The movie based on the life of Sanjay Dutt has already broken several records at the box office. However, the film has drawn criticism for its simplistic and often sympathetic portrayal of Sanjay Dutt. One of the sharpest criticisms has been that the film attempted to whitewash his image. Even the Mumbai Police had to come out in open and request filmmakers to not glorify criminals, as the youth gets inspired by such movies. If rumors are to be believed, Dawood Ibrahim, the underworld gangster has personally called up Raju and requested him to make a biopic on him.
The 2002 film Company is based loosely on D-Company’s activities, and its sequel (prequel to events in the movie), the 2005 film D, as well as Shootout at Lokhandwala (2007) and the 2010 film Once Upon a Time in Mumbai. The 2013 movie Shootout at Wadala is based on the rise of the D-Company. The film Haseena Parkar (2017) is a biographical crime film based on his sister, Haseena Parkar. But none of these films were able to whitewash his image or his family’s image. In fact, all the films had this message that in the end, the law prevails over all bad elements in the society.
Dawood is highly impressed with Sanju, in fact, he cried a lot after watching it. According to him, even his life was full of struggles, but he didn’t forget to help people and indulge in social service. He helped reduce the population of Mumbai by indulging in the 93 bomb blast. He gave employment to the youth in the D-Company. He helped finance many Bollywood movies made by struggling directors. He made Ind-Pak cricket in Sharjah famous due to his frequent visits there.
It makes complete sense that a colorful personality like Dawood should be made accessible to the general public. And who better than Raju Hirani to do it. The other reason floating in the media as to why Dawood wants a biopic is that Dawood himself is tired of the same image being used by all media houses and through a Biopic he can provide more videos and photographs for public viewing.
