In his annual Independence Day outing, Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, which released last Independence Day, Akshay Kumar took on the sanitation crisis in India, opposing the long prevalent practice of open defecation with characteristic ease. Kumar, who has gradually come to espouse social causes in his films, is the newest face of the patriotic Bollywood hero. In fact, the no of patriotic movies has increased manyfold. Gold, Bharat, Satyamev Jayate, Soorma, 1983 and many more have been announced and will be released very soon. GOLD is the most awaited of those and will be released on the August 15th. The increase in no of patriotic movies has created worries in the mind of all Tirangaa lovers.
Shwetank Srivastava has been a Tirangaa lover since last 20 years and he has always seen it on Television during Independence Day. Shwetank had filed an RTI to know if Doordarshan is going to change plans and telecast a different movie this time. Many Tirangaa fans were eagerly waiting for Doordarshan and it came as a big relief when the national broadcaster announced that there is nothing to worry about and Tirangaa will surely be telecasted. Lat 2-3 years have seen many patriotic movies like Dangal, Toilet, Bhaag Milkha release but Doordarshan stuck to its ritual to telecast Tirangaa on August 15th. Shwetank inherited the Tirangaa watching tradition from his father and now wants to pass it on to the new generation.
Tirangaa is not a movie, its an expression, its a way of life and we should thank Doordarshan in maintaining its dignity and not insulting the cult classic that Tirangaa is. It was a rumor that many producers tried to bribe the DD authorities to show their movie this time, but DD stood its ground and made it clear that if there is no Tirangaa there is no August 15th.
