Actor Rajkumar Rao recently lashed out at the media after winning the Filmfare Critics’ Award for Best Actor (Male) for his film “Trapped”. A frustrated Rao vented his unhappiness for not securing a nomination for the Best Actor (Popular) in a Leading Role award. Realising that good scripts won’t win him the popular award, he announced that he will only choose poor scripts in 2018 to win the best actor award in the next edition of Filmfare.
The Popular category for the Filmfare Best Actor comprised actors like Irrfan Khan (Hindi Medium) and Shah Rukh Khan (Raees). The nominations also included David Dhawan’s son Varun Dhawan for wearing tight shirts in Badrinath ki Duhaniya, Akshay Kumar for releasing a patriotic video just before the release of Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, Ayushmann Khurrana for highlighting “gents’ problem” in Shubh Mangal Saavdhan, and Hrithik Roshan for showing everyone that he can dance even if he turns blind—with Kaabil.
In 2017, Rao acted in critically acclaimed films like Trapped, Bareilly Ki Barfi, Behen Hogi Teri and Newton, which was India’s official entry to the Oscars. Despite stellar performances in each of these films, not getting nominated as a popular actor reportedly upset the actor. “I will choose poor scripts in 2018 and earn 100 crores. It will also help me bag awards. Moreover, I’ll plan a festive release so that my film can generate more noise.”
Rao further added that getting nominated for the Oscars is not something he anymore fancies. “I did Trapped because I really feel trapped in this industry. People found it funny when I got trapped in the house. Every time they ignored my performance and laughed at my helplessness, I cried. Unless and until I don’t win an Oscar, nobody will recognise my work; look at Dev Patel, for instance!” he said.
This brings us to our weekly contest: Name any Dev Patel film other than Slumdog Millionaire and stand a chance to win two movie tickets for Varun Dhawan’s upcoming blockbuster.
