New Delhi: A report of an Islamic Cleric saying women should not touch cucumbers or bananas has been making rounds over Internet causing a controversy.
In the report, the Cleric was quoted saying that women should not get close to bananas and cucumbers as they "resemble the male penis" and therefore could arouse women or "make them think of sex". It further added that “if women wish to eat these food items, a third party, preferably a male related to them such as their a father or husband, should cut the items into small pieces and serve.”
The report has not only reminded people of the “as innocent as a nun doing squats in a cucumber field” joke but also caused a uproar on social networking sites Facebook and Twitter.
While everyone has distanced themselves from the Cleric’s views union minister Kapil Sibal who had also caused a similar controversy couple of days ago by trying to censor Internet has backed the ban. Sahshi Tharoor who had supported Sibal on Twitter after he was given examples of “offensive material about religions & communities that could incite riots” also agreed that cucumber and particularly bananas could arouse women.
These statements immediately resulted in BJP accusing Congress of playing “vote bank politics” by saying that Sibal backing the ban was a gimmick to woo the minorities.
In spite of several attempts by Faking News to know the reasons behind their stance the spokespersons of both parties could not be reached.
