Arun Jaitley back in Finance Ministry, asks Asian Games Gold medalists to pay duty on the Gold

New Delhi: Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has rejoined his office after a break of few months due to health concerns. As expected, Mr Jaitley has kicked things off by introducing another scheme to boost government’s revenue. Finance ministry has announced that every athlete returning from Asian Games with a Gold medal will need to pay import duty on that Gold.

arun-jaitleyBookies in betting markets were taking bets on Mr. Jaitley introducing a new cess after rejoining Finance Ministry But he has stumped them by introducing a duty on Gold medals.

Explaining the rationale behind this decision, BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said ,” This step is not taken to discourage our athletes. In fact, this will motivate them to win more Gold medals so that they can contribute even more money towards nation building. Gold is coming from outside India so obviously we will have to charge duty on it else every smuggler will start winning Gold medals in international sports events and bringing in Gold in India that way.”

“This rule will be applied retrospectively on CWG Gold medallists as well, athletes got away at that time because Mr. Jaitley was not in the Finance Ministry But they will have to pay as well”, Mr. Patra added.

When asked if Silver and Bronze medalists will also need to pay any duty, he said ,”Those metals are so cheap, duty on all of them combined will not even fund one foreign trip of Mr. Modi so what is the point?”
