BMC suspends officials who failed to meet target of digging roads unnecessarily before monsoon

Pre-monsoon showers yesterday in the city signaled the arrival of monsoon bringing respite from sweltering heat to the people of the city. Though like previous  years, citizens braced themselves for the sight of dug up roads before monsoons, they were pleasantly surprised to find out that the story was different this year.

BMC however was not too pleased with the negligence of its officials who were given a clear task of unnecessary digging of roads before the first rains. Sources say that 4 senior officials were suspended for not meeting the target and thereby bringing disrepute to the BMC.

“People have expectations from us and we have to live up to them. The practice of digging up roads just before the monsoon has been followed for decades now. Even though we have the entire year to carry out any repair work, we like to do it just before it rains.

With the number of road diggings experiencing a fall this year, may citizens are now doubting the credibility of BMC. “I have been living here since the last 30 years. But for the first time have seen the authorities so lax about the digging. It was almost a ritual for me and my family members to fall into one of these ditches before the rains. I hope this is a one-off incident and they dig up the roads on priority else monsoon won’t be the same again,” said 72 year old resident from Dadar.

Few citizen groups have written to CM Devendra Fadnavis and requested his intervention. Mr. Fadnavis called a high level meeting of civic authorities to take stock of the situation.

Sources say that the civic authority may hire extra workers to ensure that the digging gets done before the it rains in full flow. JCB machines could also be engaged to expedite the task.
