Bhubaneswar: The strongest cyclone in 20 years, Cyclone Fani, did severe damage to coastal Odisha last week as places like Puri, Cuttack, Bhubaneswar suffered severe damage. While lives were saved due to timely evacuation, the state now faces a rebuilding problem with infrastructure in tatters and basic utilities in short supply.
However, the state is getting minimal attention on national news channels as election news continues to dominate. Now, Odisha government has finally come up with a way to get national attention on the natural calamity.
BJD government has decided to appoint Taimur Ali Khan as the official ambassador of the state. Taimur, the most photographed person in the world, will be invited to the state this week and along with him, 1000 journalists on Taimur beat are also expected to come to the state.
Odisha is hoping that the arrival of so many journalists will inform the rest of country about the devastation caused, and the scale of aid needed by the state to get back on its feet.
Speaking to Faking News, a senior Odisha government official said, “The rebuilding process needs a lot of help from everyone, not just the government, but from good Samaritans living all over the country. However, they can’t help if they don’t know that help is needed. Therefore, we really need media to cover our story.”
“Unfortunately, destruction of a state is a small news during the election cycle. Therefore, we are struggling to get any coverage anywhere so we started thinking which news can displace elections from news channels and we finally zeroed in on Taimur. He is the only one who is bigger news-maker than Modi and Rahul Gandhi”, he added.
Meanwhile, journalists on Taimur beat in Bandra West were seen googling Odisha in their phones.
