Mumbai. A mall in South Mumbai has introduced a new scheme to offer free movie tickets for people who buy popcorn during intermission. “Popcorn sales is our main business and movie tickets sales is for just covering the operating cost. By offering free movie tickets, we are encouraging people to visit the movie halls quite often, increasing our popcorn and soft drinks sales,” a multiplex manager told Faking News.
“Most of the 100 crore movies will not be as much as 50 crores if we do not add the 60 crores in popcorn sales. Movie tickets are sometimes sold at Rs.100 or even at a lesser price, for promotions. We don’t sell popcorn for anything lesser that Rs.150, small, medium or large. Adding Pepsi or Coke only adds to our profits. We can surely afford to give out movie tickets free as long as the crowd buys our snacks and beverages,” the manager further added.
“The thing about popcorn is, people do not complain if it is bad. But, sometimes, they complain out loud about the quality of Bollywood movies. Movies with titles like a new year being happy or be fire with a K in between – all bored the hell out of the viewers and they complained. There is an interesting side effect to this, which we enjoyed. The movies kept the audience away from the screens and they hit our snacks centre in scores. It is for these kind of movies, we will offer free tickets in the coming days,” a multiplex owner explained strategy to Faking News.
“I welcome these free movie tickets scheme. The malls think they are smart huh? I buy the tickets in bulk and sell them at Rs. 30 per ticket. With the online booking, the black ticket market was going down. This scheme gives a hope to revive our business, in multiplexes,” a black ticket veteran told Faking News.
