Bengaluru-based journalist-activist Gauri Lankesh was shot dead by a few unidentified men outside her residence, late on 5 September. Soon after the incident, politics started over her death and many journalists starting blaming right wing since Gauri Lankesh was a BJP critic. Right wingers on the other hand, suspect that naxalites are behind the incident.
It was disheartening to see that many journalists and leaders just spoke or wrote about the murderers and forgot to write even “RIP Gauri Lankesh”. One of the journalists even tried to sell her book taking a wrong advantage of the incident. But things got worse when a panelist in a prime time news debate spoke about Gauri Khan, Shah Ruk Khan’s wife, instead of Gauri Lankesh without even realizing.
In prime time debate of NTDV, five panelists and the host were debating over who killed Gauri Lankesh. After around 20 minutes of hot discussion Shehla, a PhD student got her turn to speak over the issue. Before putting her point Shehla asked two panelists to leave the show as they were defending RSS and its involvement in Gauri’s murder. Shehla put across her point well, she kept speaking for more than an hour. Shehla was interrupted by the host after she said “Gauri Khan” instead of “Gauri Lankesh”.
Host and other panelists were surprised to know that Shehla, who was invited by the top journalists of the channel, had no subject knowledge and wasn’t even aware that which Gauri is being discussed upon. Shehla had no option but to leave the show.
It’s not the first time when a panelist had to leave the show midway due to incomplete subject knowledge, PM Modi left an interview when the host Karan Thapar asked him about 2002. Congress VP Rahul Gandhi also left an interview midway when he was asked full form of MNREGA.
