Sri Lanka is on India’s tour, yes, again. And with a series happening every month, the Indian Government has decided to offer Indian citizenship to Lankan players so that they can stay and don’t have to worry about visa related issues each month.
Minister of External Affairs of India, Ms. Sushma Swaraj on Monday congratulated India for a fighting draw against Lanka on twitter through a tweet and offered them Indian citizenship. Sushma Swaraj wittily said that she watches India vs Sri Lanka almost every other month and would like to offer SriLankan players Indian citizenship, passport and Aadhar so as to reduce their time in visa formalities.
Sri Lankan cricket board thanked Sushma Swaraj and tweeted the following from their official handle “Thank you ma’am, your kindness is being discussed globally. We are lucky to get Indian citizenship”
Sri Lankan model turned Bollywood actress, Jacqueline Fernandez also thanked Sushma Swaraj.
The SL cricket board chairman K Ranatunga on this issue said “We are thankful to get Indian citizenship. This will reduce our cost of reaching India every month. The most expensive cost for us is of the ink used to write our full names on visa forms multiple times. If we get the citizenship this will be eliminated”.
Social media reacted on the issue and various jokes flooded the interent, though Bangladeshi players were seen disappointed. One of the social media users tweeted to Sushma Swaraj and said “Why don’t you launch a separate sports channel exclusively for India vs SriLanka?”
Another user said “ek jagah baar-baar jaane se izzat kam hoti hai, magar Sri Lankan players ki to badh rahi hai”
Twitter India also took a jibe and said “We are fixing #IndVsSL as the top trend for next 10 years”.
