Mumbai: Diego Maradona had to receive medical attention during Argentina’s World Cup victory against Nigeria in St Petersburg. The 1986 World Cup winner had been the centre of attention during the match as he watched Argentina’s advance to the last 16 in Russia, with television cameras showing his exuberant celebrations as Marcos Rojo scored the winning goal four minutes from time. His antics in the stands has made him eligible to play the drug addict character of Tommy Singh in Udta Punjab 2.
Maradona was seen in full flow during the Argentina match and was showing the exact emotions required to play Tommy Singh. According to the director of Udta Punjab, “Tommy is obnoxious, rude, badly behaved. You will hear a lot of expletives from him, and he is everything that will turn you off. Basically, he’s a guy who will entertain you, but you can’t take him seriously. You enjoy watching him and his antics; he is a bit of an exhibitionist.” Tommy Singh is the exact character which Maradona is in real life.”
The good thing for the producers is that Maradona will not require any preparations for the role and the shooting can start as soon as he signs the contract. The worry though is that how can Maradona be available to sign the contract in a sober position. The producers want to tap him down in Russia itself as after that it would be difficult to sign him or even know where he is located. Talks are also going on between producers and the Argentinian counterparts to make the film in two languages. The other cast members are yet to be finalized but given the screen presence of Maradona, I don’t think they require any bigger stars in the film.
