Chandigarh: Shortly after Udta Punjab film got in trouble over the mention of Punjab in the title, IPL team Kings XI Punjab is also facing the heat over the use of Punjab in the team’s name. Punjab’s ruling party Shiromani Akali Dal has accused Kings XI of deliberately defaming Punjab by dominating the last place in the IPL table.

Kings XI Punjab
From next IPL, it could just be Kings XI

“This is an attempt by our rivals to defame the state ruled by us. They want to show that Punjab state can’t progress beyond the last spot as long as Badal Government is there. We want to stop this attempt by the outsiders and request BCCI to remove Punjab from this team’s name”, said a SAD spokesperson.

“The team owner is from Himachal, she worked in Bollywood. Why not name it Kings XI Himachal or Kings XI Bollywood; it was named Kings XI Punjab only because they wanted to embarrass Punjabis. It is a huge conspiracy cooked over the last 8 years”, the spokesperson added.

BCCI is currently headed by BJP MP Anurag Thakur, BJP is also part of the ruling coalition in Punjab so most observers believe BCCI will comply with Akali Dal’s demand. However, IPL chairman is Congress MP Rajiv Shukla so many observers believe that Akali Dal’s demand will not be accepted.

Congress has already hit out at Akali Dal over this demand. Congress CM candidate Captain Amarinder Singh said, “Just removing Punjab from Kings XI’s name won’t hide the incompetence of Badal Government. Kings XI’s struggles are a symbol of the failures of the state. If we get a chance, we will change Punjab’s and Kings XI’s fortunes. Look how RCB from Congress ruled Karnataka did in this year’s IPL.”

Other major party in Punjab, AAP, has decided to remain quiet about the IPL team from the state ruled by them.
