Opposition demands National wicket keeping Guarantee Act (NWGA) to provide employment to keepers till Dhoni retires

New Delhi. MS Dhoni was rumoured to retire from limited-overs cricket by social media fans after the India-England One-day International (ODI) series last year. The rumour broke out after MS Dhoni carried the match ball to the dressing room. But the keeper is going strong and the last series against Australia proved that MS is going to stay here for a long time to come.

Though it is good for the game, the unemployment it has created among the wicket-keepers in India is a worrying sign for the government.

Saha, Pant, Naman Ojha, Ajay Ratra, Parthiv Patel, Karthik, and many others in the lower divisions are jobless currently and the government has failed to ensure a job for these young people. Some wicketkeepers have left wicket keeping and finding some other profession to keep themselves busy and earning at the same time.

Congress has demanded the government to come out with a scheme like MNREGA where the wicket keepers will be given guaranteed job for some days in the year. Dhoni’s retirement is a never ending saga and something should surely be done for the wicket keepers of these countries. Arun Jaitley has promised action w.r.t the demand and we hope there is a bill passed in parliament soon.
