Rahane’s exclusion from the first two Tests based on “current form” – Rahane’s last series was the first in his career where he failed to make an impact, while Rohit Sharma scored a hundred and two fifties – has been the biggest talking point of this series. Many believed that finally Rahane will get his chance given that India have already lost the series and will try to give other players a chance. But the rumor was put to bed by Rahane himself by batting splendidly in the nets and spending the maximum time in nets among the Indian players.
If net practice and past performance are a parameter to judge a player than Rahane would easily have been in the playing 11 for the first two matches. But the current regime of Virat-Shastri strongly believe that players who bat well in nets have a less chance of performing well in match situation. Due to this players who bat or bowl poorly in the nets have been given the first preference for match day selection. This is the basis due to which Parthiv Patel and Rohit Sharma easily got chances in the previous match. Parthiv was not catching the balls well in the nets and Kohli thought that he will improve during the real match, but it was a rare exception where the player performed badly in the match too. Kohli-Shastri believe that the players will take some time adjusting to the new philosophy which they are trying to inculcate among the members. But once it is given time, the philosophy will reap great rewards.
Dinesh karthik looked vulnerable in the nets and hardly middled a ball which makes a strong indication that he will be drafted into the team for the 3rd test instead of Parthiv Patel.
