Rahane's good slip fielding kept him out of the team: Sources

Cape Town: India’s team selection for the 1st test match against South Africa surprised quite a few people after middle order batsman Ajinkya Rahane was dropped. Rahane, one of the most consistent batsmen for India overseas, couldn’t find a place in the final XI as Rohit Sharma was preferred in a 5 front line batsmen strategy. While many people thought that Rahane’s poor form during the home season could be the reason, sources have now revealed that his good slip fielding ensured he was dropped for the game.

Unreliable slip fielder, he is likely to catch some!

Speaking to Faking News on the condition of anonymity, a team India insider said ,”Even though Rahane didn’t score too many runs during the home season, everyone knows he always bats well on an away tour. He averaged close to 70 in South Africa during the previous tour so batting wise, there was no reason to drop him. However, his slip fielding let him down. He just doesn’t offer us the reliability that other slip fielders do. He takes more catches than he drops and that is just not good enough to make it to the Indian slip cordon.”

“Dropping catches is mandatory to make it to the Indian Test side. How else do you think Dhawan is keeping his place in the side? Now someone like Rahane taking the catches in the cordon could have had a demoralizing effect on his fellow slip fielders who were trying their best to drop catches”, he added.

When asked about Ishant Sharma’s exclusion, the source said ,”Forget his exclusion for this Test, people are still wondering about his inclusion for the 79 Tests that he has played.”
